Why I Stepped Away From Social Media – Creative Reflection

Social media has been evolving over many years away from being a social hub where people share their lives, towards algorithmic theatres of endless chasing of dopamine and distraction. Have you noticed how what once felt human now feels hollow, performative, and disconnected? The feeds are now filled with synthetic content, recycled videos, and click-bait loops. It feels as though the heart of what once brought people together in a digital landscape has been replaced by fragmented attention and a thinning of human texture where conversations quietly faded.

The Hollowing of the Feed

Instagram and Facebook in particular have shifted from social spaces into algorithmic stages. It was not wrong, but it does feel hollow. Their feeds became a stream of noise: Synthetic clips, sensational content, and recycled reels designed to keep people scrolling rather than connecting. Alongside this, people are increasingly creating short-form entertainment, trend-based videos, and rapid content loops that prioritise visibility over connection. The atmosphere changed into entertainment hubs where meaning and depth were neglected, often feeding energy away from in-person social activities.

The feed-driven social media bubble (Big Four: Facebook, Instagram, X, Tik Tok) is converging into the same format of viral videos, recycled trends, and algorithmic dopamine loops crossing over into each other. It has turned into a homogenised feed of oversaturation where everything feels like a remix of everything else. This is what can cause a noticeable decline in meaningful personal participation, posting, and engagement on these platforms.

The Creative Impact

Over time, the atmosphere of these platforms began to pull me away from the depth and stillness my creative life depends on. For someone who creates from depth, stillness, and mythic resonance, their atmosphere no longer nourishes. Social media encourages validation-seeking, comparison, and identity performance. It rewards speed over substance, reaction over reflection, where creativity becomes disrupted by constant algorithmic pressure.

While there is a lot of impressive creative content on social media, my own creative rhythm could not adapt or meet the algorithm demands. It was because of this that I decided to leave Instagram and Facebook as a creator, while also archiving my personal accounts due to the significant reduction in meaningful participation, engagement, and genuine connection. It was as if the core reason and agreement I originally joined these platforms had been replaced by something I no longer care for or want to support. I’m struggling to find meaning for its purpose in my life. Of course, this shift is not only due to the choices of these social media conglomerates but also broader cultural changes, where people increasingly prefer to share their private lives in messaging apps and private groups, which I prefer as well.

Leaving out of Coherence

The decision to step away was not frustration or moral judgement. It was alignment, authenticity, and finding new external ways to match the movements of my inner coherence. Mythical Heart needed a quieter outer path that supports slow growth, symbolic storytelling, and mythic resonance.

New Creative Ecosystems

The evolving sanctuary I am building lives outside any dopamine economy, and it needed more room to breathe. I am currently exploring new creative ecosystems including podcasts, Mythic Spark Videos, and Newsletter Cycles that honour the voice, cadence, and natural rhythm of Mythical Heart without any demands or performance. These new spaces feel quieter, steadier, and more attuned to the way Mythical Heart naturally moves.

Leaving social media was not a rejection of the world; it was a return to the kind of creative life that feels true. A life shaped by depth, resonance, and coherence. A life where the inner flame can stay steady.
